Ich schreibe sie, weil ich zusehen muss, wie zwei der stärksten Menschen, die ich kenne, an einer Last verzweifeln, die kein Mensch allein tragen kann. Während sie jede Sekunde am Bett meines 3-jährigen Neffen Elian verbringen, möchte ich ihnen den Rücken freihalten – vor der Bürokratie und vor der nackten existenziellen Angst.

<div>​Kurz nach Weihnachten begann es ganz unscheinbar. Elian fing gelegentlich an zu schielen. Kurz darauf bemerkten seine Eltern, dass er Probleme mit der linken Hand hatte – er kam kaum noch allein in seinen Handschuh. Nur wenige Tage nach Neujahr verschlechterte sich sein Zustand dramatisch: Er konnte plötzlich kaum noch laufen. Am 07.01.2026 brachte ein MRT die traurige Gewissheit und ein Urteil ohne Gnade. Die Diagnose: DIPG (H3 K27M).

<div>​Was ist DIPG eigentlich?
</div>

</div>
<div>​DIPG (Diffuses intrinsisches Ponsgliom) ist der Albtraum jeder Familie. Es ist ein extrem aggressiver, bösartiger Tumor, der mitten im Hirnstamm wächst. Dies ist die empfindlichste Stelle des Gehirns – das Schaltzentrum, das alle lebenswichtigen Funktionen wie das Atmen, den Herzschlag, das Schlucken und die Motorik steuert. Dieser Tumor zerstört diese Funktionen nach und nach.

<div>​Das Grausame an DIPG: Der Tumor wächst nicht als fester Knoten, den man herausschneiden könnte. Er verwebt sich wie feiner Sand in einem Schwamm mit dem gesunden Nervengewebe. Eine Operation ist daher unmöglich, da sie das Leben sofort beenden würde. Bis heute gilt DIPG als eine der am schwersten zu behandelnden Krankheiten in der Kindermedizin.

<div>​Sechs Wochen zwischen Hoffen und Sterben
</div>

<div>​Was nach der Diagnose folgte, war psychische Folter. Die ersten Biopsieergebnisse gaben uns allen Hoffnung: „Grad 1“, hieß es vorläufig. Alle weinten vor Erleichterung. Doch während wir quälende sechs Wochen auf die endgültige Genetik warteten, baute Elian rapide ab. Sein linker Arm war bereits massiv beeinträchtigt, er schielte immer stärker, er konnte kaum noch schlucken und sein linkes Bein war ebenfalls betroffen. Die endgültige Analyse war dann die grausame Wahrheit: Die Genetik bestätigte die H3-K27M-Mutation – die aggressivste Form. Die kurze Hoffnung war eine Täuschung.

<div>​Der Kampf ums Überleben (Intensivstation &amp; Entzug)
</div>

<div>​Elian ist ein Löwe. Nach einer Komplikation bei der Port-OP führte ein unerkannter Pseudokrupp-Anfall dazu, dass er sechs Tage auf der Intensivstation an der Lungenmaschine beatmet werden musste. Er litt unter Medikamenten-Entzugserscheinungen und musste sich mühsam zurück ins Leben kämpfen. Dieser Rückschlag kostete ihn drei wertvolle Wochen Zeit für die Bestrahlung – Zeit, die ein DIPG-Kind eigentlich nicht hat.

<div>​Warum Elians Eltern den Standardweg verlassen: Ziel 100.000 €
</div>

<div>​Elians Familie hat in Bielefeld ein tolles Ärzteteam, aber der „Standardweg“ der Krankenkassen sieht eine Chemotherapie (Temozolomid) vor, die bei dieser Tumorart oft kaum Wirkung zeigt, aber den kleinen Körper massiv belastet. Wir wollen aber alle mehr für Elian.

<div>​Elians Reise soll nach Zürich fortgeführt werden. Dort gibt es spezialisierte Zentren, die mit neuen Medikamenten (wie ONC201/206) und Technologien wie dem fokussierten Ultraschall arbeiten. Dieser dient zur Öffnung der Blut-Hirn-Schranke für die verbesserte Wirkung der genannten Medikamente. Leider ist dieser Weg privat zu finanzieren. Allein das internationale Tumorboard kostet 860 €. Diese Behandlungskosten im Ausland können in die Zehntausende gehen. Das ist sehr viel Geld für die kleine Familie, deswegen sind sie dringend auf eure Spenden angewiesen.

<div>● ​Schutz für den großen Bruder: Elians 9-jähriger Bruder besucht eine Sprachförderschule. Er braucht gerade jetzt doppelte Unterstützung und Zuwendung, um in diesem Sturm nicht unterzugehen. In Zürich bräuchte er spezielle pädagogische Unterstützung einer privaten Lehrkraft.

<div>● ​Ein Stück Würde zu Hause: Der Umbau des Schlafzimmers in ein kinderfreundliches und behindertengerechtes Refugium für Elian.

<div>● ​Den ersten Urlaub: Einmal ans Meer. Einmal die Wellen sehen. Elian hat in seinen drei Jahren noch nie Urlaub machen können.

<div>● ​Existenzielle Sicherheit: Da beide Eltern Elian 24 Stunden pflegen und mental am Ende ihrer Kräfte sind, können sie aktuell nicht arbeiten. Eure Hilfe sorgt dafür, dass sie sich nicht zwischen „Miete zahlen“ und „beim kranken Kind sein“ entscheiden müssen.

<div>​Die Zeit drängt. Die vielversprechendsten Therapieansätze erfolgen nach der Bestrahlung, dann, wenn der Tumor geschwächt ist. Die Bestrahlungstherapie endet voraussichtlich am 14.05.26.

<div>Shortly after Christmas, it all began very subtly. Elian occasionally started to cross his eyes. Soon after, his parents noticed problems with his left hand—he could barely get into his glove on his own. Just a few days after New Year’s, his condition worsened dramatically: suddenly, he could hardly walk. On January 7, 2026, an MRI brought devastating certainty—and a merciless verdict. The diagnosis: DIPG (H3 K27M).

<div>What Is DIPG?

<div>DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is every family’s worst nightmare. It is an extremely aggressive, malignant tumor that grows in the brainstem—the most sensitive area of the brain. This is the control center for all vital functions such as breathing, heartbeat, swallowing, and motor control. The tumor gradually destroys these functions.

<div>What makes DIPG so cruel is that it does not grow as a solid mass that can simply be removed. Instead, it spreads like fine sand through a sponge, intertwining with healthy nerve tissue. Surgery is therefore impossible, as it would immediately end the child’s life. To this day, DIPG is considered one of the most difficult diseases to treat in pediatric medicine.

<div>Six Weeks Between Hope and Despair

<div>What followed the diagnosis was psychological torture. The initial biopsy results gave all of us hope: “Grade 1,” they said at first. Everyone cried with relief. But during the agonizing six weeks we waited for the final genetic results, Elian’s condition rapidly declined. His left arm became severely impaired, his eye-crossing worsened, he could barely swallow, and his left leg was affected as well. The final analysis then revealed the cruel truth: the genetics confirmed the H3-K27M mutation—the most aggressive form. The brief hope had been an illusion.

<div>The Fight for Survival (ICU &amp; Withdrawal)

<div>Elian is a fighter. After a complication during port surgery, an undetected croup attack led to him being placed on a ventilator in the ICU for six days. He suffered from medication withdrawal symptoms and had to fight his way painfully back to life. This setback cost him three precious weeks of radiation therapy—time a child with DIPG simply does not have.

<div>Why Elian’s Parents Are Leaving the Standard Path: Goal €100,000

<div>Elian’s family has an excellent medical team in Bielefeld. However, the “standard” treatment covered by insurance involves chemotherapy (temozolomide), which often has little effect on this type of tumor while placing a heavy burden on a small child’s body. We all want more for Elian.

<div>Elian’s journey is planned to continue in Zurich. There are specialized centers working with new medications (such as ONC201/206) and technologies like focused ultrasound, which can temporarily open the blood-brain barrier to improve the effectiveness of these treatments. Unfortunately, this path must be privately funded. The international tumor board alone costs €860, and total treatment expenses abroad can reach tens of thousands. This is an enormous financial burden for the family, which is why they urgently need your support.
