It's hard to believe that it has been six years since I came on board as the Head Swim Coach. It has been nothing but a delight for me. Over the years, I have come to know many of you and am very thankful to be a part of the Key West community. Coaching these kids has become one of the biggest joys of my life and I cannot imagine not coaching them each summer.
While I look forward to the start of swim season each year, I dread the one thing that makes it miserable for everyone.....COLD WATER.
Those first few weeks of practice are brutal. The water is so frigid that it is literally painful to get in. Hypothermia is a real and constant concern of mine as well as the parents. The kids cannot focus when they are shivering and they certainly cannot be in the water long enough to build up their endurance or have a meaningful practice when all they want to do is get out. The first few weeks especially are so important not only for conditioning but also for coming together as a team. The kids are miserable and they do not look forward to swimming.
But there is a solution......a POOL HEATER.
I promise you that every single child will be tremendously appreciative as will all of the parents and coaches. I would love to see the kids come to the first practices excited to get going versus dreading the experience. Plus, every member of the swim club will benefit. With the warmer water, members will be able to get in sooner and have a much more enjoyable time.
I urge everyone to please Help Fund the Pool Heater. The cost to purchase and install a pool heater is $20,000. I am looking to you to pitch in whatever you can afford. Although our goal would be to have everyone donate $100, this is certainly not affordable for everyone so if you have the ability and desire to donate $250 or $500, I would be tremendously grateful. My goal is to have this fully funded by March 30th so that it can be installed and ready to go well before swim season 2018 which is right around the corner! Having a pool heater means having many happy swimmers.
Thank you for making this dream a reality and our Killer Whales stronger than ever.
