Heartworms are a Killer

Sadly, 99% of the adult dogs that the Tunica Humane Society rescues are heartworm positive.  It's a cold hard fact.  Heartworms left untreated are a death sentence over time. 

Emilee is a one-year old sweet dog who was recently rescued. Unfortunately she is one of 16 dogs who are heartworm positive, and the shelter is treating them all at a cost of over $10,000.  

The Tunica Humane Society spends over $22,000 a year just on heartworm preventative for their shelter dogs.  They cannot transport these dogs until they are treated.  And locally, people simply don't adopt a heartworm positive dog, even though THE SHELTER PAYS FOR THEIR TREATMENT once they are in their new home.

In the last few weeks, every dog they rescued has been positive for heartworms.  They are moving forward very aggressively with their treatment because ALL of their kennels are tied up and all of their foster homes are full.  They simply have to get these dogs moving on to their forever homes asap so they can make room for more dogs that desperately need help.
