Hearts for Hailey

Donation protected
Hailey is in the ICU.

On our evening walk, Hailey jerked on her leash, then fell on her back and had a seizure - her first ever. She was unable to move and had to be rushed to the emergency hospital.

X-rays confirmed that she had fluid in her lungs and needed to be placed in an oxygen cage. Fortunately, she seems to have no broken bones.

Her breathing has improved, but she continues to have no progress in neurological symptoms, and the vets have determined she needs an MRI.

I spend the day sitting with her outside of her oxygen cage. She is confused and crying a bit, but she is as sweet as always - she gave me gentle kisses on my hands through her porthole and wagged her beautiful tail for me. Even through her pain and confusion, she is my sweet, gentle, trusting lovebug.

The medical team is estimating that her current medical costs are at $8,000, and will rise if she needs more testing or a longer stay. The vets are completely unsure of a diagnosis/prognosis until further testing is done.

I never thought I would have to do this, but if Hailey has ever brought you joy, and you feel compelled to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. Even if you have only seen pictures of her sweet face, and you don't know what a lovely, kind, sweet animal she is. She is my heart. She is my world. I am devastated by her pain and only want to bring her home, hug her tight, make her better.

Hailey's Story:

Hailey had a rough start to life - after being born to a street dog in Puerto Rico, she waited in a no-kill shelter for 4 years for a forever family to find her and take her home. That family never came. Fortunately, the wonderful folks at Stray from the Heart saw her sweet demeanor and incredible potential, and Hailey was brought to New York City to find a home.

That's when I found my best friend and four-legged soulmate.

Hailey was very shy and nervous for the whole first year - she never barked, and I couldn't touch her on the head. She always seemed to know she was being silly, though - her tail would thump-thump-thump on the ground like a drum every time you looked her way, the same way it thumped in her oxygen cage in the ICU today.

Eventually, with lots of turkey and a strict regimen of Cuddle Training, Hailey learned that not every place is scary, and that she could trust the hands coming toward her to bring her love. She started barking, joyously. She learned how to ask for head pets and ear scratches - it turns out, they feel pretty amazing.

Eight years later, and Hailey is a completely different dog. Never fearful, unafraid to use her voice, happy and silly and clever and pure joy.

She learned how to trust us to care for her and protect her from the scary world; now we will do anything in our means to fulfill that promise.
