Introducing Ethan
My nephew Ethan is 3 years old. He is full of energy and personality. He already knows how to captivate an audience, with either his charming smile or his natural ability as a showman. Dare I say it...that boy can sing his heart out! His zest for life and his love for people is surely what makes him fight so hard to stay with us in this world.
Birth
He was born with a congenital heart defect that requires multiple invasive surgeries and treatments throughout his lifetime. He has a single ventricle heart with Tricuspid Atresia. Basically, he has half of a heart.
2 months old
At 2 months old, he survived the first stage, undergoing the Blalock-Taussig Shunt and Pulmonary Artery Banding procedures.
6 months old
The next operation was when he was 6 months old, and his doctor completed the Glenn Shunt procedure.
Now
Then recently, on December 5, 2017, Ethan's surgeon performed the Fontan procedure, again at Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN. This time, he developed pneumonia and sepsis and was placed on ECMO therapy. He has since had to go back into the OR twice due to complications and revisions.
He will be hospitalized there for at least 4-6 weeks if all goes well. The hospital is two and a half hours from their hometown of Cleveland, TN, creating an emotional and financial hardship, as most of their friends and family cannot be there to support them and they are unable to work during this unstable and uncertain time.
