<div>indrukwekkende uitdaging: in slechts drie weken tijd zullen wij van Amsterdam naar Split rijden; een reis van 2000 kilometer door in totaal tien landen, om geld in te zamelen voor Stichting Heart to Handle.

<div>Heart to Handle is in 2014 opgezet door Daphne Koolen, nadat zij op 20-jarige leeftijd haar vader Norbert verloor aan de gevolgen van een hartstilstand. Zijn overlijden kwam onverwachts; voorafgaand waren er géén symptomen. In zijn nagedachtenis is Daphne samen met vier vriendinnen van Groningen naar Barcelona gefietst, om geld in te zamelen naar onderzoek dat zich richt op het vroegtijdig identificeren van erfelijke hartaandoeningen.

<div>Het onderzoek waar wij dit jaar geld voor gaan inzamelen is “De  PREVENT-CREATE-studie”, een onderzoek dat wordt gedaan door artsen werkzaam in het UMC Utrecht. 1 op de 200 Nederlanders krijgt te maken met een erfelijke hartziekte. Vaak gaat het om jonge

<div>patiënten van gemiddeld 35 jaar. Dit heeft een grote impact op hun familie aangezien er 50% kans is op het doorgeven van de ziekte aan

<div>kinderen.

<div>De PREDICT-studie onderzoekt erfelijke hartaandoeningen en werkt aan een geavanceerd model om nog beter te voorspellen hoe groot de kans is dat iemand met specifieke genen hartproblemen of een hartaanval krijgt.

<div>Met het geld dat wij inzamelen wil de groep artsen van het UMC een zogenaamde “risico calculator” creëren. Door deze risico calculator is het al vroeg mogelijk om inzichten te krijgen in de risico’s voor mogelijke patiënten.

<div>Met deze inzichten kunnen behandelingen veel gerichter worden ingezet, waardoor patiënten onnodige beperkingen, zoals sportrestricties,

<div>bespaard blijven. Zo zorgt PREDICT niet alleen voor betere zorg, maar ook voor een aanzienlijke verbetering van de kwaliteit van leven van patiënten en een efficiëntere aanpak voor zorgverleners.
