<div>Deze zomer zullen wij met 8 studenten uit Leiden c.a. 2500 kilometer fietsen naar Florence in Italië namens stichting Heart to Handle. Het doel van deze reis is om zo veel mogelijk geld op te halen voor onderzoek naar hart- en vaatziekten. In de afgelopen tien jaar hebben studenten zoals wij, dankzij Heart to Handle, al meer dan 500.000 euro bijeengebracht voor diverse onderzoeken naar hart- en vaatziekten.

<div>Het onderzoek waar wij dit jaar geld voor gaan inzamelen is “De PREDICT-studie”, een onderzoek dat wordt gedaan door artsen werkzaam in het UMC Utrecht. 1 op de 200 Nederlanders krijgt te maken met een erfelijke hartziekte. Vaak gaat het om jonge patiënten van gemiddeld 35 jaar. Dit heeft een grote impact op hun familie aangezien er 50% kans is op het doorgeven van de ziekte aan kinderen.

<div>De PREDICT-studie onderzoekt erfelijke hartaandoeningen en werkt aan een geavanceerd model om nog beter te voorspellen hoe groot de kans is dat iemand met specifieke genen hartproblemen of een hartaanval krijgt.

<div>De meesten van ons zijn volkomen onervaren fietsers en wij zijn dan momenteel ook hard bezig met de voorbereidingen. Alle kleine beetjes helpen om zo veel mogelijk geld in te zamelen voor ons onderzoek!
