Heart Surgeries to Save Children

Approximately 1% of children worldwide are born with heart defects. Many of these pediatric heart defects can be fixed with one surgery, but most children in developing countries do not have access to cardiologists or pediatric heart surgeons who can diagnose and treat their heart defects, and a trip to another country to obtain this care is often out of reach. As a result, many children die from treatable heart disease.
The International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF) is a nonprofit organization that provides free life-saving pediatric heart surgeries around the world. I recently became an ICHF volunteer to assist in patient care and surgeries during mission trips, and to research ways to improve outcomes for children with heart disease worldwide. I hope to join the team on a medical mission trip to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic from April 29-May 12, 2018.
As a future pediatric heart surgeon planning to integrate mission work throughout my life, joining the upcoming ICHF trip will be invaluable. Joining this trip will give me experience with the operations of a medical nonprofit, and will provide the basis for continuing this type of work.
ICHF travels internationally to:
· provide necessary life-saving pediatric heart surgeries for children who would otherwise not have access to such care; and
· train local teams of medical professionals to care for these patients with the goal of one day empowering such teams to care for these patients on their own; and
· send and donate medications, surgical equipment, and other supplies to hospitals and clinics that cannot afford them
I would be very grateful for your support in this endeavor, as it would help me assist the ICHF in providing life-saving care and examining outcomes in pediatric patients after heart surgery. Every medical student going on the trip is expected to pay his or her own way, so your donations will go towards travel expenses for this trip. Any unused funds will be donated to the ICHF.
