Heart Liver Transplant-Mike Carman

Donation protected
Mike was born with a congenital heart defect, a Transposition of the Great Vessels.  The most recent surgical repairs he had done in 1992 have held up for many years, however he is now in heart failure, has an aneurism on his pulmonary valve, and has just been diagnosed with Stage IV Cirrhosis of the liver (caused by the tremendous amounts of medication he has had to take over the years).  Doctors are unable to do surgery and make repairs as they did in 1992 and now Mike needs not only a heart transplant, but also a liver transplant.  This surgery cannot be done in Spokane and doctors in Seattle were not agreeable to doing it there.  Mike has three more opportunities for this surgery:  Los Angles, Boston, and Philadelphia.  Mike must travel to each location until one is willing and able to do the transplant.  The first location out of the remaining three he will travel to is Los Angeles.  He will be there for approximately five days undergoing tests, etc.  If he is approved for the surgery, he will then be placed on a waiting list for an available heart and liver.  During that time, he is required to be within 50 miles of the hospital and the wait could be as long as six months.  Once the surgery is complete, there will be a lengthy amount of time he will need to remain in Los Angeles.  Assuming he is approved for the surgery and they remain in Los
Angeles, Amy hopes to be able to transfer her job with the Salvation Army to the Los Angeles area, and then once again work in Spokane when they return.  If he is denied in Los Angeles, then similar plans would be made for Boston and/or Philadelphia.

What do Mike and Amy need?  Love and prayers – absolutely, but to make all of this happen, Mike and Amy need MONEY!   Funds donated to this campaign will cover:  transportation costs, medical costs not covered by insurance, living expenses such as housing and groceries, and probably an extensive list of things we are not currently considering.  Although his doctor told him a long time ago he should apply for Social Security disability, Mike always refused until just recently.  Now he and Amy are waiting for approval for that, waiting to find out if the doctor in Los Angeles will see him and then approve him for surgery, waiting to hear how much insurance will cover for this surgery and associated medical expenses.  Waiting is so stressful!

My husband Greg and Mike have been friends since 1993 and I have known Mike for eight years.  Mike is one of the most genuinely nicest people I’ve ever known.  I think one of the most important things we can each do in life is to support and be there for each other during difficult times.  I believe all of us combined can do wonders for Mike and Amy and help with the financial burdens they have now and the ones to come.  Even if Mike is not approved for the surgery, this campaign will continue for his future medical expenses and anything else he and Amy may need.  If Mike is approved for surgery, we will likely increase the needed amount on this campaign.

ANY contribution, whether it is $5 or $100 is appreciated and needed!  Please contribute what you can and share, share, share!  Let’s do this!

I will provide updates as often as possible!

Please note:  All funds will be managed by Mike's Mom (Joanne Carman).  At no time will any funds be in my possession.
