I am starting this fund raiser to collect sufficient money to buy a Phonak Cros B hearing aid.
For some background : My friend - a very successful boy who is currently completing out his Masters at University of Waterloo - is fighting against hearing loss. After many years of letting it go by, he had finally gone in for an appointment to an ENT specialist here at Waterloo, ON, Canada. He was advised that his hearing ability was detiorating quickly with one ear at a 40% hearing ability and the other at a 80% hearing ability. This condition makes it similar to a single-sided deafness.
Until recently, I never knew the struggles of a person with a hearing disability. It effects his daily life. People often assume he is inattentive ( including me until recently ) and loud. It all came down to him hearing little to nothing when someone speaks on his right ear side. Also since he hears back his own voice through one ear alone, he often tends to speak louder than necessary. Small things - like being unable to take a driving lesson as cars at Canada have the driver on the left and the instructor on the right - I only realised from his experiences. His is a daily struggle.
He did agree to the ENT's advise - on reviewing his reports - to buy a hearing aid since its mandatory for a person at such a severe but reversable hearing loss. On purchase, his insurance company rejected the claim as it is not part of the university insurance benefits.
Prioritising his tution fees over the hearing aid, he let go of the aid and is back to his daily day struggle.
So this campaign is initiated by me in order to gather sufficient funds to buy a deserving boy the recommended hearing aid. It was priced at $3,100 CAD at the medical clinic here at Waterloo.
To all who contribute, I would like to convey my heart felt thanks.
