I'm sure we've all heard this quote. Well, I'm walking the talk and have plans to put up a greenhouse on my native reservation located in the corner of south eastern Utah on the Navajo Nation where the people in my grandmothers' community can not only save time and money, but eat well too! I would like to see my family and friends struggle less and thrive. Many of my loved ones are from the Navajo Nation which is miles away from an actual grocery store. Along with that is the convenience of unhealthy foods (gas station food) that are harmful to anyone's health.
With this greenhouse the community will be able to feed oneself at a deeper level than just eating good food. People of all ages, I hope, will be able to feel fulfilled by helping with produce, planting, watering, and simply caring for the garden. Support from all is welcomed as are volunteers and anyone just wanting to be a part of some of the solutions to the problems that are rampant in Navajo communities. I also want to be an example for other native communities, and all communities in general, to become self-sustaining and resilient in a world of growing chaos and uncertainty.
I have plans to speak with local schools to get the youth involved with this project and eventually would like to put a farmers market into place with the produce that is grown, which I am working on to be EBT friendly.
I think we could all benefit from this in one way or another. And with common diseases known to Native Americans, this will be a sure way to not only cure, but prevent disease.

Plans are to have this up and running by the end of July 2017. I have been working with James Stodgel at OnlyGreenDesign in Santa Fe, NM and we have the design as well as a written out step-by-step plan of this process. I hope you're all as excited as I am!
