Health literacy is a major issue and concern around the world. Low health literacy leads to poorer health outcomes, a decrease in self-care, more hospitalizations, and death. It includes “people’s knowledge, motivation and competences to access, understand, appraise, and apply health information in order to make judgments and take decisions in everyday life concerning healthcare, disease prevention and health promotion to maintain or improve quality of life during the life course”. A low health literacy is detrimental to one’s health, happiness, and prosperity.
In Ghana, there is a gap in health professional-patient interaction to acquire the needed healthcare services. This leads to many people not receiving the care they need, receiving the wrong care, or seeking help from other sources (i.e. spiritualists, homeopathy) which may not help their illness.
As healthcare professionals, we have received the necessary skills and knowledge to benefit this population. We have been educated on how to safely and effectively use medications as well as non-pharmacological interventions to increase and support each patient’s well-being. We know how to communicate effectively to improve health literacy and will be available to people who may not seek out healthcare advice due to whatever barrier is in their way. We are dedicated and determined to use our expertise to assist anyone in need and feel there is a significant need for our skills in Accra, Ghana. With this mission, we will be able to leave a lasting impact on the less fortunate, improve lives, and sharpen our skills and knowledge needed to become amazing, well rounded pharmacists.
Mission Goal
Provide education and medication therapy management on hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and kidney disease to the residents of Ghana . This will consist of a two day event where we will provide a health fair and we will offer our services to anyone who is in need.
We need your help. 100% of the donation goes to buying medication and supplies of vital importance that will help us to provide the most accurate counseling and interventions required to improve lives.
