Health Care in Uganda

Donation protected
Hi everyone! For those who may not know me well (or for those who do), my name is Julia Cooper and I am a senior nursing student at the University of Scranton.  I was recently blessed with the opportunity to travel to Uganda, Africa this upcoming January. A group of around 30 people comprised of students and faculty from the nursing, theology, and health administration departments will have the chance to travel to different villages and towns immersing ourselves in the culture of the people who we will meet along our way.

The first part of my trip focuses more on the theological aspect of our journey.  Since a major part of this trip has to do with religion and culture, the first part of my journey will allow me to travel to churches and cathedrals all throughout Uganda.  My hope is that while I am further exploring my Catholic roots, I will learn about the culture and beliefs of the people that I will be visiting on my journey.  We get to help build a mud home in the Kebiremu Resettlement and hopefully get to sing and dance with the local communities. I then believe that I can take those different beliefs and sense of resilience and apply it to my future nursing career.

The second part of my trip is something I am really excited about. I get the opportunity to interact with the nursing students in the Bwindi community hospital, provide basic nursing care in a variety of settings like post-mass clinics and hospitals, and learn about the health care issues that the Ugandan people may be facing.  We travel to an orphanage and to a nursery which, for all who know me, is something I am very excited about. I really would love the chance to interact with the children in these areas, bring them little gifts, and then bring what I learned from them back and apply it to my hopeful career in pediatric nursing.

Anything you may be willing to donate to my cause would go towards my traveling and service, and then to the gifts that we hope to bring along with us! Thank you for any donation big or small, and I will be sure to document every second of this trip so I can share this journey with you all when I return!

Thank you,
Julia
