August 2014 Meet Dogma. Two weeks ago, my family went to the national forest to check out Venus Fly Traps. As we were driving along a dirt road, a scraggly, severely malnourished dog frenetically approached the truck. We looked around but there was no one else in the woods. We slowly passed the dog but she insisted we stop. When I opened my door, I was nearly bowled over by the stench- and she was a good 10 feet away! We could see every bone in her starved body and she appeared to have mange, with sores covering her face. She is a rather small dog, yet had a 3" wide collar that would have restrained a rabid pit bull. The collar was so large on her little neck, that she was unable to even bend her head down all the way. This disgustingly grimy collar had been on her so long her neck had literally begun to grow around and over it.
She was so relieved and excited to see someone, anyone, that we couldn't possibly abandon her as someone else had done. My son graciously gave her the breakfast wrap he was in the middle of and it disappeared with one inhalation.
She seemed terrified of the truck and we could only wonder what part vehicles played in her short past. Speculations abound. She had obviously had pups and we were confused as to why her dry teats were so exaggeratedly saggy. The vet explained that it's due to having multiple litters. The vet also said she looks like a pure bred chocolate lab, which are popular bird dogs in this area. She explained that it's nearly epidemic here to breed a dog like Dogma and then dump them somewhere once they are no longer deemed to be good breeders. After a look at Dogma's teeth, the vet thinks she's only about 3 years old.
After getting her home and bathed, little hints of trauma began slipping out. As ecstatic as she is with us, she's still weary with our movements. If we raise our hand for some reason, she cowers. If we stand abruptly, she cowers. She does not know any basic commands, like sit. She is not housebroken. Yet she has the sweetest, most loving demeanor! Within two days, she was starting to figure out what 'sit' means, she has learned she's not allowed in the kitchen...she watches our every movement and tries her best to please. When we look at her, she simply beams and gives the biggest grin a dog could give!
We immediately took her, that first day, to a pet ER. Then we followed up with our regular vet during the week. Dogma was diagnosed with a pretty bad ear infection and tapeworms, for which she has been taking medications and is feeling much better. Luckily, she was free of mange and the sores are thought to be from rubbing her sore ear on the ground.
Unfortunately, she was also diagnosed with heart worms. We wiped ourselves out with this first vet visit and the vet estimated heart worm treatment to range from $1100 to $1500.
As if that's not bad enough, Dogma coughs, chokes and sometimes vomits every time she drinks. Her symptoms are consistent with a crushed larynx, which would likely require surgery. However, we cannot afford to get her the x-rays to determine for sure and we certainly cannot afford surgery should it be needed.
We are currently hoping for $300 from Red Rover to go towards the heartworm treatment. That leaves an outstanding $500 minimum for the heartworm treatment, plus another $318 for the prep work, which must take place prior to the treatment. Additionally, the vet highly recommends a follow up visit to complete her shots and check her ear, however that’s an estimated $335 that I don’t have. So in total, we need $1150 minimum and that’s not including whatever may be needed to help her drinking problem.
We are asking for any amount that you can donate to help Dogma receive the medical care she needs. She has received no love or appreciation during her short life and she deserves this opportunity to cash in on that innate need we all have to be loved. She deserves a long, happy life with a family that will cherish her. Please prayerfully consider what you may be able to contribute to buy her a long and fulfilled life.
