Please Help Me House Hurting Women

Donation protected
I need your help to house the hurting.

Let me tell you about Deidre. She is a single woman in her late 20’s, currently living in her mother’s house on her couch. She is currently attending community college. Her dream is to be a Physician’s Assistant. She has two jobs but does not make enough to pay rent and was evicted from her apartment. Her mother is in a domestic violent situation and lives with a man who is abusive and is an alcoholic. Deidre was arrested because she beat up the man who was beating on her mother. She got out of jail after staying overnight but is back living at this house because she doesn’t have anywhere to go.

Maryam is a single Iranian woman who speaks very little English. She was brought to Charlotte through an abusive husband. She now lives alone in a poorly furnished apartment and although she attends community college she cannot find a job. She is Muslim and wears a full length garb and because of this she is ostracized. She has three – four outfits that she washes and wears daily. She is alone here with no income as her brother sends her money to help pay her rent.

Denise is a single mother raising two daughters on minimum wages, having lived in and out of shelters. She has yet to obtain her GED because she had to work to provide for her children. For the past five years she has been working double shifts at a job she was quite dedicated to until she had an accident on the job because she was working in an unsafe environment. The institution fired her saying that it was because they were going through layoffs rather than dealing with Denise's accident. Now Denise has found herself back in the street having to face the shelters once again.

Healing Vine Harbor, Inc. (HVH) wants to help women like this. I can share many more stories as I personally work with these three women. In an effort to combat this problem, we are creating a residential independent living skills program for women.

The mission is to serve the underserved young women that society has either thrown away or are unwilling to support. These individuals are struggling and are unprepared and unstable. Therefore, they are not contributing successfully nor positively to their community since they do not possess the necessary skills to manage life's trials.

The idea of this program came from my heart. I have had a love for people since I was a little girl and a compassion for those hurting. Currently I am a College Counselor. I have a BA in Psychology and a MA in Rehabilitation Counseling. My passion for counseling troubled youth and adults was ignited in 1987 and I have been mentoring young people ever since which has led to the birth of this dream. With nearly 30 years professional experience, my goal is to create  an 18 to 24 month residential program designed to train these women and to instill self-sufficiency. Many young people age out of foster care and are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or are just bouncing from sofa to sofa. Through HVH, our residents will develop independent living skills to prepare them for adulthood through a variety of services including but not limited to college preparation, money management, daily living skills, healthy relationship building, etiquette, home economics, employability skills, mentoring, cultural and spiritual awareness as well as community service experiences. Therefore, we are confident that individuals completing HVH's program will leave prepared to become tax paying, self-sufficient, independent and productive members of society.

Through mentoring, we have witnessed lives changed, seen drop outs become college graduates, seen petty criminals become working citizens and seen others live on their own and become mentors themselves so we know this works.

With the monies we raise, your contribution will be used towards start-up costs i.e. purchasing a house, securing furniture and equipment, providing room and board as well as hiring staff to provide the services needed above.

Thank you for helping Healing Vine Harbor make a difference in the lives of others.

We ask that if you are unable to give, you simply Like, Share, Tweet, or Pin our fundraising page in hopes that we can spread the word and reach our goal.
