Who heals the healer? Or better yet, how can the community care for the healers whose work cannot be quantified by our existing institutions?
Healing for the Healers is a fundraising initiative for a collective of 9 Black healers, primarily based in Atlanta but also located in Boston, Virginia, New York and North Carolina. These healers are practiced in, to name just a few, African Traditional Religious practices, Reiki, African and indigenous Healing dance and modalities, mental and physical health modalities, mother wit, Earth-based practices and ordained ministries across many aspects of religious practice. Each has dedicated their gifts, talents, and energy to facilitate individual and communal healing from the trauma and pain of this year’s turmoil.
From counseling individual community members struggling with thoughts of suicide to organizing healing ceremonies for communities grieving deadly shootings, Black healers do the tough yet indispensible work of nurturing souls and mending tears in our communities. And all too often, the providers shoulder the cost of skills and services—community services upon which you can’t put a price tag, yet have very real expenses. This fundraising initiative is the first step in acknowledging this broken pattern and sowing seeds for stabilizing the Black healer infrastructure. Investing in Black healers is vital to the wellness and upliftment of the Black community.
Our initial goal is to raise $172,055, which will provide financial support for each healer in the collective over the next 6 months. These flexible funds will go towards supporting each healer’s distinct needs during this time: for most it will be for basic living expenses like rent, gas money and necessary self-care; for others it will fund the cost of advanced training, and for others it will be used to cover the cost of providing healing services to their community. Whatever the use, the intention of each dollar donated will be to provide the financial support necessary for the healer to continue their work.
Over the course of the next six weeks, we will be spotlighting each of the healers participating in this collective fundraising initiative on our webpage here. Learn about their work in community and what it will take for them to continue this work into 2021. This initiative is organized by Neith Sankofa , the creator, CEO and principal facilitator of The Light Warrior SiStar Hood. She is an author, dancer, consultant and coach in the areas of ritual, self-healing, and embodiment and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
