Spring Uprising!
Spring is just around the corner, and our gardens need soil! Our volunteers have been working for months to transform our very own Test Site into a productive community garden space, and as we prepare for planting season, Healing Gardens CHA is soliciting donations toward soil, mulch, vessels, seeds, and other supplies. As we build out this site, we'll not only be preparing to help feed the people, our team will be proving out methods that we can take to additional sites around Chattanooga!
Healing Gardens CHA sprouted last summer as an organic offshoot of the nationwide movement to recognize the power of the people to resist injustice and strengthen our Black communities. Since then, our all-volunteer, all-season #GardenArmy has deployed to community gardens and outdoor spaces around the Chattanooga area to provide on-the-ground support for local urban farmers and the crops they grow.
We believe that change starts in the ground itself. Did you know that the physical act of gardening exposes you to microbiota that helps lower rates of depression? Soil health determines the health of all our relations. How we treat the soil, especially the soil we grow our food in, directly affects the health of not only our bodies, but our minds and spirits. Healthy soil grows resilient and abundant nutrient-dense food and gives us a real, physical connection with the natural world around us and with our ancestors whose bodies have rejoined the very earth we till.
Improving the health of our soil also plays a vital role in our struggle against oppression. By supporting small-scale community gardening, we can reduce our dependence on large-scale corporate agriculture and put the means of production back in the hands of the people. With every okra, sweet potato, radish, cabbage, and kale, we're helping our friends and neighbors rediscover the health and happiness that come through cultivating our little part of mankind's oldest relationship: the plants we eat!
Power to the People!
