Healing for Alice

Donation protected
On September 5, 2018, my 11-year old niece, Alice, was badly injured in a car accident at the intersection of Trindle Rd and Sinclair in Mechanicsburg, PA. The impact of the crash was so severe that Alice had to be cut from the backseat and air-lifted to the nearest trauma unit. Every parent's worst nightmare had come true.

The injuries sweet Alice sustained to her face and body are serious and extremely graphic. As a result of the force of the crash, her upper jaw bone was smashed and all but 3 of her top teeth are gone; her upper and lower lips were cut into three pieces, and she suffered a bruised liver & lung and sustained a concussion. Worst of all, her right hand was badly mangled and barely recognizable.

Upon arriving at the emergency room, Alice was rushed into immediate surgery to sew shut the gashes in her lips and reset/reattach the bones and skin on her right hand. Time will tell how long it will take for her to fully regain feeling in her dominant hand, if ever. For now, she's a leftie. Jokes aside, it's a guarantee that Alice will need many future surgeries on her hand, face & fingers, physical and psychological therapy, and when the time comes, reparative dental surgery, root canals, bridges, and implants.

These are the x-rays of her hand; they're very graphic. I debated showing you the actual photo of her bloodied hand, but it's just too horrific, so you'll have to imagine the severity. No person, let alone an 11-year-old child, should experience this.

Despite all of these awful injuries, she's being so positive and strong through all of this, while the adults around her are falling to pieces. We are all so grateful to the amazing EMTs, trauma team, radiologists, nurses, doctors and surgeons who helped make Alice whole again. Words cannot express how thankful we are that she is still alive to grow up, achieve her dreams, and make all of us laugh with her wonderful wit and charm. Still, our hearts break to see her in such pain; to know how much she has suffered from this unnecessary tragedy and will for many years to come. I wish we could take this hurt from her.

But since we can't, all we can do is try to give Alice and her family support through this trying time. Financially, it is still unknown how expensive future surgeries and dental work will cost her family. Everyone knows health insurance in America is...let's say...challenging, and because of that, we must support each other in times like these. It truly takes a village, and Alice will get through this knowing she is loved and cared for. Let's try to help soften the blow of this unplanned, traumatic event in her young life.

Thank you so much on behalf of Alice and her family for whatever you can give. We love you and appreciate your kindness and generosity. Hug your loved ones, drive safe and always buckle up!

Sincerely,

Janine (Osif) / Alice's Aunt & Godmother
