Heal Da Homies: Community Fridge & Groceries Fund

Donation protected
Heal Da Homies was created to meet the needs of marginalized communities that are victims of systemic racism and inter-generational oppression due to food insecurity and policing systems.

A report from the D.C. Food Policy Council projected that 16% or more of D.C.’s population, around 113,000 people, could be food insecure this year, increased from 10.6% before the pandemic. Structural racism plays a significant factor too, as Black families in the District are 13.5 times more likely than white families to report they didn’t have enough food to eat at times and Latino families were 6.5 times more likely to report hunger.

To ease this inaccessibility of basic needs, Heal Da Homies strives to feed DC residents of Ward 6 with the implementation of a community fridge that will be maintained by Kayla Kelly and several other American University student volunteers. We plan to start in-person operations in late-January 2021.

Funds are needed for groceries for the fridge, the creation of educational materials for residents, and for emergency mutual aid. With the creation of this project, it will strengthen under-sourced communities that are dispassionately affected by COVID-19 and unemployment and educate community members about the resources available to them.

How our impact will be measured - Through the AU volunteers, the project’s outcome will be measured through a documentation system that records the weight of food moving through the fridge, the outgoing costs and incoming funds to get a sense of monthly overheads, and the number of unique visitors of the fridge. Through the community members, the outcome will be measured through the comments book next to the fridge for community feedback on the kinds of food items that are most needed, management suggestions, and to overall hold ourselves accountable. On the administrative end (Kayla), they’ll be asking fridge users, staff, and volunteers to complete a monthly questionnaire about the functioning of the fridge, their experiences with the fridge during a certain period, and evaluating its service to them.
