Hey everybody, it's Sam. I am a married 40 year old with three beautiful children, all under 6, and Courtney my absolutely amazing wife and rock of nine years.
So, I had 3 surgeries in 2017 to have my entire colon removed because 9 years of ulcerative colitis finally took it's toll. My final surgery was in December of 2017, and since then it's been nothing but complications. They told me that I was misdiagnosed and I actually have Crohn's disease. I started immuno suppressive therapy for the Crohn's but developed an inter pelvic abcess in April. This entails having a drain going through my butt cheek into the abcess which is against my tailbone (extremely painful), and 24 hour IV antibiotics. I've had those for 14 weeks already. They tried removing the IV antibiotics Aug 22nd, switching to oral antibiotics. Since then, all of the progress I made is now in jeopardy. I have to go back to the hospital AGAIN (Aug 25) to get my antibiotics back and they will change my drain then also.
In the past 18 months I've been hospitalized 10 times for all of this which, needless to say, has put an extreme strain on our finances. We are doing everything in our power to try and keep our home, but without being able to work it has been very difficult. I have been out of work since late April, so at this point just putting food on the table is a struggle. On top of not being able to work we have had to travel between our home in the Chicago suburbs to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota every 2 weeks for follow up appointments.
The prognosis at this point is still unknown. It may be another 12 weeks before I can get back to work......hopefully. We will keep you updated.
Its been an extremely difficult and trying time for us, so anything you can do will be a HUGE help!!
