He dodged death, but hit with bills

Our roles in life can change with a single incident.  Yihsin has been a loving and dutiful husband and father and the breadwinner, but he did not expect to be a stroke victim at age 48 more than 1500 miles away from his home in Indiana.

A seasoned truck driver of 10 years, Yihsin was taking a shower break at a Texan rest stop when he collapsed due to intracerebral hemorrhage. According to the National Stroke Foundation, “[this type of stroke is] responsible for about 40 percent of all stroke deaths”, and few fully recover. The family was told that his chances of survival were 50/50, and to prepare for the worst. Thankfully, this was not the case after witnessing more than 20 days of persistent vegetative state. After 30 days in critical care and 18 more days in a physical therapy clinic, Yihsin stood up against all odds and walked again!

Though Yihsin has cheated death, it is harder to cheat life. The expenses of spending 46 days in different types of healthcare facilities were significant, even with insurance.  For his recovery, Caresource HMO Marketplace insurance will help cover some of the bill. The out of pocket maximum is in the $15-$20K range, not including transportation, mortgage, and local medical costs estimated at $3500 per month.  Though his legs still cramp up after 10 minutes of exercise, Yihsin continues to work very hard towards a complete recovery. The expected timeline for recovery would be 3 to 5 months. He is already focusing all his energy on physical therapy and is making large strides towards his goal.

While Yihsin is giving his all to recover quickly, the doctors determine that he cannot return to truck driving. They also advise him not to work on any job during the rehab and recovery period.  Yihsin has a family of six, with 3 sons and 1 daughter all attending colleges. The family is doing everything they can to encourage him through these trials and to support themselves, but there are still gaps to fill. Besides the bills from the treatments in Texas, ongoing rehab costs continues to incur in order to help Yihsin back to normal strength to take a new job. Yihsin and his family would be truly grateful for your support during these times.
