Stu Smith is a former San Francisco Small Business Owner and home owner who has paid taxes and employed San Franciscans and who values the diversity and progressive nature of his hometown.  His Great Grandfather served on the Conflagration Committee that settled insurance claims after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.  Grandfather was a banking executive for The Bank of California long headquartered in San Francisco and Grandmother was a philanthropist.  Born in Palo Alto and raised in San Francisco, Stu attended public schools and San Jose State University, leaving in 1961 to start a tech business in Silicon Valley.  Retired in 1969 and in the early 1970\'s started owning and operating several restaurants in the City.  Disabled by Aids in the early 1990s, Stu volunteered for Shanti Project, and as effective treatments became available, Stu began devoting his time to serving in a variety of ways the many agencies serving people with life threatening illnesses.  Learning of the technology and communication challenges of small non profits, he volunteered for many other non profits and resource centers so he could connect agencies he volunteered for to the many services they needed, like public relations, transportation services for the disabled, web development and training, event management, board development and strategic planning.  Stu continues to serve on the boards of the Paratransit Coordinating, The Castro Country Club, Shanti, Tin Pan Alley Productions and produces a bi monthly public television show called The Drag Show.  He operates several websites and is very active in the recovery community.  Stu considers himself a progressive with a heart and a brain, so wants to listen carefully to all positions taken by his party and colleagues and those with entirely different positions.  Stu is not the type of human being who will never  budge or compromise when progress must be made to serve his fellows.
