Help me get to Canada #GoAndre

I never truly understood what it means to say "It Takes A Village" until I had two smart and active boys age 7 and 11. This is about my 11 year old son, Andre, who's fearlessness never ceases to amaze me. He takes chances and tries new things like skateboarding, roller skating, horseback riding, water skiing and rock climbing. When he first tried out for basketball, he was intimidated by the other boys because they had more ball skills than he did but he did not give up! He practiced and built up his confidence in preparation for game day. He also plays soccer and is on an elite travel team with a very demanding schedule. He practices year round and studies professional techniques on television and video. Now if that's not enough he plays the trumpet and is in the school jazz band; and he's in the newspaper club at school. His favorite subjects are math and social studies.

Enter the People to People Student Ambassador Program (www.peopletopeople.com ) - an international educational travel program where they expose students to cultural traditions, global awareness and foster responsibility, independence and a lifetime experience. We received an invitational letter for Andre and went to a meeting. From there he had to get three letters of recommendations - he got one from his math teacher, band teacher and soccer coach. He had to write his own summary of why he wanted to become a Student Ambassador and the final step was the interview.

I am overjoyed and proud to say that Andre has been accepted to journey to several parts of Canada on the Canadian Cultures program next summer. Traveling with 40 other students and several teachers. This is the ultimate classroom!

His math teacher said: "Andre is a kind and wonderful student. He works hard and always tries his hardest to succeed."

His band teacher said: "Andre's ability to work well with other students as well as his interest in the arts enriches his cultural awareness."

His soccer coach said: "Andre is an individual whose character traits are well beyond his age. His commitment and positive work ethic to the team has allowed him to flourish as a player and more importantly as a future leader."

Andre said: "I want to be a Student Ambassador because I'm ready to learn about Canadian Cultures and meet new people."

His little brother Evan said: "Is Andre going to Canada without us!"

This is where I need to be fearless and let him fly because it's what we prepare them to do. But we cannot do it alone. It Takes A Village.

So we are reaching out to  you - The Village - to  help us raise the funds for Andre to travel and experience life beyond his everyday surroundings. It's not enough to be a local citizen of your community but to be a global citizen of the world.

We need your support and generosity. Any contribution is well appreciated.

Help Andre go to Canada!
