Meg, a Teacher Having Brain Surgery

Donation protected
This is for a Wonderful Teacher and Friend!
My sister, Meghan Lewis, does not know this page is set up for her.  She is fiercely independent, to a fault, and would never ask for help on her own. She is having neuro/heart surgery in November to remove a shunt she's had in her brain since she was a child.   A shunt, surgically placed, helps drain brain fluid when your body is unable to drain it naturally.  She was born hydrocephalic, and has had her shunt for most of her life.   Recently, she's battled several pulmonary embolisms as well as other health concerns which have been attributed to her shunt.
The blood clots and infections are part of her body's way of rejection.  After many tests and scans (along with second & third Dr. opinions) it was decided she needed to have her shunt removed and then relocated/replaced.
A little personal info on her.  - She is a teacher in the FL Keys where she teaches profoundly handicapped children who are LUCKY to have her.  She's been teaching for almost 20 yrs. She truly loves her job and is excellent at it.  Although she's employed and has health insurance, she's been rejected from many programs due to pre-existing conditions.   Her hospital stay will include 10 days in the ICU.  She won't be in her classroom or at school for almost 2 months, so those days will go unpaid.  While we, her family, are most concerned for her health and a successful surgery, we are also concerned for her finances after surgery.  She has a 10 yr old daughter who will be staying with family/friends for much of Meg's hospitalization and recovery.  Right now, the biggest gift I could give to my sister would be to help lessen her financial worries about impending hospital bills so she and her daughter can move forward and start a wonderful, fresh new year.
Thank you for reading and considering Meghan.  She's been a true fighter from the start and has so much charisma and strength.  She  always gives back  to everyone around her in so many ways.  I just want to help give something back to her.

Gratefully,
Kirsten Bergk (sister)
