I am flying to Cleveland, Ohio in February, 2018 in order to have open heart surgery to replace my heart's mitral valve and to close a hole in my heart that is between my left atrium and ventricle. Why not have the operation here in Tucson? Sixteen months ago I had open heart surgery here in Tucson to repair my mitral valve. This past fall, after a year of not getting better, and having several tests at the Banner-University Medical Center, my cardiac imaging specialist medical doctor reommended the Cleveland Clinic in order to get the very best surgical team since: 1) the hole in my heart lies very close to the AV Node nerve, which coordinates the heartbeat; and 2) I am having oopen heart surgery for the second time in 18 months.
The funds I am requesting covers the cost of 1) travel by plane for me and my wife, Melissa; and 2) staying in a hotel for 17 days for my wife as she supports me during pre-operation testing and post-operative recovery to the point where I am able to return to Tucson.
It is important that I have this operation soon, since I am in heart failure. This means my heart is not maintaining an adequate blood flow causing me to be short of breath and excessively tired. The abnormal backward flow of my blood from the left side of the heart back into the lungs puts a strain on the pulmonary veins and heart which can cause swelling of the heart and veins. So far I am still within normal limits and want to keep in that way. Waiting could cause the heart to abnormally swell.
My prognosis in good. A successful outcome to surgery would allow my to get back to normal activities and strength. Please support my fund.
