Hayley Jane Quick is a spirited, happy and bubbly nineteen year old from Maryland in Newcastle who at a young age was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called bilateral polymicrogyria (BP). Because of her condition, Hayley suffers regular and recurrent seizures (epilepsy), has intellectual and physical disabilities and delayed development (currently Hayley has similar mental development to that of a young child). She also suffers problems with swallowing which often result in aspirations and extended visits to ICU, speech and muscle weakness as well as hearing loss, among other day to day health challenges.
H, as she is fondly known, is the eldest daughter of RAAF officer David Quick and his wife Melanie. She also has a younger sister Montana who is 14 and a budding soccer star with a heart condition that will require surgery later this year. The family are Maryland locals who are very involved in their community and the first to help out neighbours, friends and family when needed, usually at the expense of their own physical and mental health.
Currently Hayley is a patient at John Hunter Hospital here in Newcastle where she has been for the past 3 months without discharge, unable to walk and fighting off various infections as well as working to regain her muscle strength. Just over two weeks ago, she took a turn for the worse suffering from aspiration and a collapsed lung and was taken from the rehabilitation unit to ICU bringing her recovering process back to step one. Prior to this she spent 3 months in and out of the hospital and ICU, including a transfer to Sydney’s Westmead hospital in early January in an effort to get more specialised care. Before being taken to hospital in October, Hayley was lively and able to jump, dance and run, even riding horses. Thankfully, Hayley has bounced back from her visit to ICU and is now back in rehab. However, getting Hayley home is still proving to have some challenges as Hayley is often very wheelchair dependant and the house is not setup to accomodate Hayley safely.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help the family get Hayley home, and relieve some of the pressures of day to day life. But we can't do it without your help!
