Havens Homestead Roof Project

As you're driving around the bend on Montauk Highway, just where Center Moriches meets East Moriches, you'll always be greeted by this large handsome looking house, if you pause long enough to wonder about it's history, well, here goes....

It's the former home of John Scudder and Mary Pellatreau Havens. Once considered the most prominent of families in all of the Moriches area. The Havens owned all the Moriches from Terrill River to Senix Creek north to Dongans Line (approximately Sunrise Highway). At this time the Havens Family built a small gable roof structure. A new structure was built to the west of the old house in the Dutch Colonial style c1750. No changes are known to have been made until c1898 then the new 2 ½ story Dutch Gambrel Colonial Revival style addition, was built to the west end of the 1750’s Dutch Colonial. Yep, the house is pretty OLD!

Stay with me here - - we're about to get to the part of why we're asking to help raise funds!!

The Moriches Bay Historical Society and the Ketcham Inn Foundation, Inc., as steward of the Historic Havens Homestead is a not for profit corporation established in 1966 to preserve and restore the Historic Havens Homestead, establish collections reflective of the Moriches Bay Area and educate the general public about the area’s history.

Our main source of raising funds is the revenue collected in the Museum Shop, located in the historic Tuttle Barn, to the north of the Historic Havens House, from the sale of donated antiques, collectibles, household items and the work of local artists to support monthly maintenance. But we've reached a point where we can't get by, the roof is in desperate need of repair. While standing in the attic during the day, you can see the sunlight shining right through. It's that bad.

Why would you want to help? Well, this is one of the oldest buildings that offers Center Moriches and East Moriches part of our local charm, the bulldozers have been busy, taking away huge parcels of our wooded areas for strip malls and office buildings. If the repairs to the roof don't come soon, the whole building will become another casualty on our scenic drive out of town, too sad.

Please help us out with as much or as little as your household can afford. Every bit will be ever so appreciated.
