Harvest Village is an agritourism business that hosts guests on our farm, either in our BnB or camping. About a month ago (October 9th) we experienced a tragedy, our barn burned down. As bad as it was to have our barn go up in flames, the worst part was losing eight sheep, including 3 newborn lambs.
Because a nice barn is such an important part of our guests’ Farm Stay experience we were actually in the process of remodeling and expanding the barn. Thankfully, our insurance covered the loss of the barn but it does not cover the loss of our animals nor the improvements that we were planning to make to the barn (primarily a new concrete floor - the old barn just had a dirt floor)
We estimate that a concrete slab to build the new barn on will cost about $4000 and new sheep to rebuild our flock will be around $1000.
After the fire many people expressed a desire to help us to recover from our loss. This crowd funding campaign is a way that we can offer people a means to help out.
With the fire happening so close to the onset of this year’s unseasonably early start of wet winter weather it does not look like we will be able to get the concrete down until Spring arrives. We were able to get the barn site cleaned up and some grading done before things just got too muddy and frozen. We now plan to cover the site with a 40’x40’ tarp and work on preparing the barn construction materials in anticipation of a spring barn raising!
