Harry & Susan - ALS Support

Donation protected
I have set up this fundraising page to support my dear friends, Harry and Susan Steingrubey, as they struggle to come to terms with Harry's diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).  There is no treatment for ALS and there is no cure.  ALS is a fatal disease.

Harry's symptoms began several years ago, and eventually he was disabled from his job at Procter and Gamble in St. Louis.  He was formally diagnosed with ALS in early 2018.

Because of the rapid progression of Harry's disease, Susan made the wrenching decision in April of this year to leave her job as a paralegal, a career that has spanned over 35 years in the St. Louis metropolitan area, in order to provide the care and companionship to Harry that he desperately needs at this time, and, after 37 years of marriage, to spend what precious time is left to them together.

While ALS robs individuals of muscle control, speech, the ability to swallow and the ability to breathe, ALS also financially devastates families.  The progressive nature of ALS, which eventually leads to paralysis, means that expenses will continue to increase as the level of care which Harry needs increases.  Harry and Susan are faced with extraordinary expenses to make their home wheelchair accessible, along with other accommodations and critical needs which will allow Susan to care for Harry in their home for as long as she is able.  The loss of Susan's income seems to make paying for all of these expenses an impossibility.  But to continue to work full time, losing the precious days which are left to them, while helping to pay for in-home care for Harry, was likewise not a sustainable decision either.

Those are the harsh facts.  To those of you who know Harry and Susan personally, I know you will agree that they have always had the unique ability to make us laugh.  My life has been so enriched by their friendship over all of these years.  If our lives are measured by the relationships that we have with others (and I truly believe they are), then I ask very humbly that you give monetarily if you are moved to do so. While I know that the goal I have set will not begin to cover all of their needs, my hope is that this devastating financial burden can be lessened while our friends navigate these very difficult times. Thank you so very much.
