My name is Wesley Rosenbaum, and I am a teacher and coach at Democracy Prep Public Schools in Harlem. I began teaching in Memphis, Tennessee as a 2012 Teach America Corps Member and then moved to New York after being offered a coaching and teaching position here with DP. I have worked hard to build a successful team at my school, but with your support, I believe we can offer a competitive basketball program to the young people who need it the most.
Democracy Prep is a high performing charter network; we have 17 elementary, middle, and high schools across the northeast and one school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At Democracy Prep, we are relentless in creating the opportunity for all our scholars to attend the college of their choice – despite any obstacles they have may have encountered prior, during, or following their time at Democracy Prep. The approach works for most of our students; 100% of our senior class is headed to college this September.
However, with an approach that is so highly focused on academic achievement, we sometimes neglect the athletic development of our scholars. The majority of them reside in the Harlem and Bronx community, with a few making the commute from Queens and Brooklyn. Informally, basketball has been a foundation of the community, but as a network, we struggle to provide opportunities for our scholars to participate in a well-structured and resourced basketball environment that is in partnership with an educational/non AAU system.
I am doing everything that I can to provide a taste of what other public and private schools are able to provide to their scholar-athletes. Our main areas of need are in equipment and apparel. It is a constant struggle for our scholar-athletes to obtain the basic necessities to be prepared for training, practicing, and playing in games. The following is a list of potential items we are hoping to obtain as we prepare for the winter basketball season.
Apparel:
- practice uniforms
- socks
- uniforms
- equipment bag
- t-shirts
- traveling sweats
- hooded sweatshirts
- headbands
Our scholar-athletes work harder than many of us can imagine. Some commute from over an hour away, and then engage in our rigorous classes from 7:25 am to 4:45 pm, with homework from 7 different subjects every night. They work hard because our team of extraordinary teachers knows what it takes to prepare them for college. But we are currently unable to give them the athletic programs they deserve. We need your support.
