On Friday 1st of April 2022, the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadhan, a huge fire tore through Waaheen Market in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa. Waaheen Market area was Somaliland’s largest commercial district and employment area. The inferno completely destroyed the market, nearby shops, and commercial buildings. Today a large part of Hargeisa city lies in ruins.

 

The destruction brought by the fire resulted in thousands of Somalilanders (a significant portion were women-managed and owned businesses) losing their businesses, jobs, and livelihoods. Official sources “Jamaal Aideed – Head of the Somaliland Chamber of Commerce, The Republic of Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs” estimates the fire has caused damages amounting to $1.5-$2bn.

 

The effects of this fire represent an extreme economic shock for Somaliland. It has resulted in unprecedented economic hardship. A humanitarian disaster affecting tens of thousands of people is slowly unfolding. Somaliland, therefore, requires urgent humanitarian, financial and material support.

Funds raised will be passed by the charity directly to the Waaheen Market Relief Committee established by the Government of Somaliland. Any UK charities that wish to support relief efforts should contact Somaliland’s Mission in the UK.
