Dad's Cancer Journey

Donation protected
In 2013, my father Rudy Brown was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC); a rare form of cancer that affects the salivary glands of the head and neck. He has had one major surgery along the area of the neck to remove a tumor, went into remission for a brief time, and unfortunately the cancer returned. He has had surgery, 33 rounds of radiation, endured chemotherapy, immunotherapy, participated in the GITR clinical treatment trial, and the cancer is still there.

He has a degree in I.T. and is self-employed, but his health has caused him to go from being the primary provider for a family of five to not being able to work at all. Since the doctors have said he is unable to work; the last year has been a difficult period of adjustment. With three children, two in college and one who just started high school my parents have a lot on their plate and a lot more weight on their shoulders.

This December my dad will be undergoing his second major surgery in the same area, with a recovery time of six months maybe longer. Initially not many otolaryngologists; also known as ear, nose, throat specialists, wanted to see him and were dismissive. It has taken a while to find a doctor who had the courage to do the surgery since it is in the same area and a risky operation. Doctors say the surgery is being done to improve the quality of life; as a result, he will not be able to work for an extended time.

This is a serious situation my dad has been going through and we need help. My  mom will be his primary caregiver during that time, and taking him to and from his radiation treatments monday through friday for a couple of weeks; so she will not be able to work as much as she could. We have gone from having two consistent working parents, to one, to zero; due to things that are completely out of our control.

The reason this page was created was in hopes of raising funds that will help our family in many ways. It will help my dad recover in peace without the added stress of our future; as well as help my mom provide the proper care to her husband and her family without stressing herself out about finances, the business, her husband's health, and the education of the children. It is being done to help my youngest brother be able to focus on school, and basketball without worrying about a situation that should not concern a child and to allow me and my brother the chance to continue our higher education.

Anything donated to our goal will be used to contribute to my dad’s health expenses, also to pay a partial amount of the bills and be able to afford groceries until my mom is able to work full time again and he recovers.

This is an urgent and serious situation, and anything donated will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support and taking the time to read our story. God bless you and your loved ones.
