On June 23, 2014, Vraja Kumara (Peter Tibbitts), the younger brother and disciple of Indradyumna Swami, incurred a traumatic brain injury.  Due to this injury he was rushed to the hospital where he stayed in intensive care for approximately 6 weeks. While at the hospital he underwent emergency brain and reconstructive surgery.   He was in a coma for a week or so, then gradually started coming around.  This was truly a miracle!  He was not expected to survive….During his stay at the hospital he had round the clock care, he could not walk or talk.  Was fed through feeding tubes.  As a result of this he is now blind in one eye. This will be permanent.

Gradually, little by little, he started progressing.  He was transferred to a rehabilitation facility, where he got wonderful treatment.  He learned to walk, talk, eat, and basically learned primary life skills.  Because he only has Medicaid, he was only permitted to stay two weeks.  It was devastating because he was progressing so quickly.  From the rehab he went to a “Medicaid” nursing home…. When I took him there, he was very childlike.  This nursing home was not qualified to handle someone with a brain injury.

Finally after a few weeks we found another Medicaid nursing home which was more suited to his needs.  They have an Alzheimer’s wing, which is locked down for his own safety.  At this time the level of his recovery is much more than we had hoped for. Prior to this event, eight years ago he woke up and could not move or hear.  He had experienced a fairly serious stroke.  Which left him deaf in one ear and it seriously affected his mental processing.  He was no longer able to work at any job.  These two trauma’s together, have compounded his inability to function on a normal level.

When this incident first occurred we were overwhelmed with support, both emotional and financial.  Over the months following the accident the support has dwindled. Medicaid only pays a little for the nursing home and doctor visits.  At this time the following items are in short fall.  Adult diapers, money for transportation, vitamins, physical therapy, neurological therapy, supplemental food.   I am the sole supporter of the family, it is overwhelming.  I have to take off work when he has doctor’s appointments in order to transport him.  This facility is 30 miles away from our home.  We are trying to relocate him to a facility that is more suited to brain injury patients.  Although he is definitely making progress, he still has a long way to go before he can come home.  When he does come home he will still need in home health care.  His former contribution to household finances now has to be shifted to the nursing home which leaves us in a financially challenged position.

We are asking for friends, god-brothers and sisters, relatives, literally everyone to please help us through this difficult time in our life.  My husband is one of the kindest, most compassionate, God conscious persons I have ever known. He is loved by many.
