Hannah McPhillimy: Debut Album

Hello friends,

Come 24th of August I'm moving to the U.S to do a two year masters in music composition and I would be so grateful for your support so that I can continue writing and releasing music, alongside my study.

Your money will go directly into the making of my debut album:  On Hold .

Hold On, Why America?

America isn't somewhere I thought I would be drawn into - the terrible chocolate alone, poses a massive problem  - but I am drawn to making music and, in my book, it boasts the greatest music cities in the world.

Funnily enough, I have also had several opportunities to play in a good few of them over the last 3 years  - NYC, Austin, Nashville, Chicago - and while there I have racked up both the most weird and the most wonderful experiences of my life:

playing to a crowd of IT developers munching popcorn inside a sculpture of a giant fingernail, I think, wins this highly competitive contest.

And it has steadily wangled itself into my bones.

And so, when a professor I met on a music retreat last year suggested I apply to his program at the University of Michigan, something within me decided I would and here I am a year later about to take up my place and move to the land of the free.

It feels to me like the right decision and the next stage in my development as a musical professional.

Here's why -

The training:

U of M is one of the top public schools in the US and I will have one on one mentorship with some very cool living composers. I am also planning to take classes in sound recording and electronic music, and by the end of my time there, should be equipped to write music for an entire orchestra - all of which will make me far a more versatile music maker.

The connections:

The campus is bursting with students from different nationalities, disciplines and backgrounds while the city of Ann Arbor is within striking distance of Detroit, Chicago and Toronto, with easy access to the East Coast; ripe territory for new collaborators and audiences.

I see this course as an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity to delve deeply into the thing I love to do most and a continuation of the music career that I started here in Belfast.

Hold On, Why GoFundMe?

However, as wonderful as all of this is, it truthfully doesn't leave much in the way of funds for recording music, which is a barrier if I want to maintain my career while I study.

In the last two months, I  started working with a wonderful producer for the first time called Stu Reid to begin the process of putting together my first album. Having self-released 4 E.Ps in the last 4 years, I am much more sure of my sound and confident in my ability to deliver a high quality record, but I also appreciate the expertise of someone like Stu who is helping to draw the best out of me and oversee the project to its highest professional standard.

I am really pleased with the direction it is going so far - I think it's bigger and braver and I think it can build on past exposure I've had on RTE 2fm and BBC 6 Music. I just hope you will like it too!

We have almost finished 4 songs and, should I get the money together, I am aiming to record another 8 in time to release it to the public by this time next year.
