Tim's wife, Yvette and his friends from 50 years in Soccer/Football are organizing this fundraiser.
In early October, Tim Hankinson went in for a routine check-up and physical. His cholesterol number caught the attention of his doctor so a calcium screen was ordered. That screen caught a glimpse of something of concern in his lungs. He went back in for more scans. The lungs looked less concerning, but these scans caught some spots on his liver that required more tests. A PET scan was ordered which revealed some horrible news-Tim has cancerous tumors originating in his esophagus that spread to his stomach and into his liver. A biopsy was performed and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Adenocarcinoma.
His only course of action is chemotherapy as the cancer was too wide spread for radiation. One other hope he has is to participate in a trial at MD Anderson, which he will do.
He, of course, will do all he can to fight this. His soccer coaching career may be coming to a close, but there is a lot to live for. We are raising money because this course of treatment will have many expenses attached to it. He will have to travel to Houston each week for trial treatments and medical appointments. Some weeks he will have to stay in Houston for a few days at a time. Although the chemotherapy will be partially covered by insurance, we are unsure of how much of the trial drugs will be covered since they are not yet FDA approved. Cancer is expensive as we all know and without help this course of treatment would not be possible.
We are asking for donations of any amount to offset the cost of travel and medical expenses. All donations will go directly to Tim's fight with cancer.
We will continue to post updates, but we also encourage everyone to reach out to Tim and give him some emotional support as well. Let's also use this time to reconnect with those in our lives that came together because of the love of soccer and the connection through Tim Hankinson.
