Handicap Van for the Parker Family

My name is Toria Parker, I'm 42 years old and I live in Henderson, NC with my mother who is 76 years old. We are starting this GoFundMe campaign because my mother and I are in desperate need of a handicapped accessible van. My mother and I both have medical needs. I am a paraplegic and in a wheelchair, the result of a car accident that I was injured in at age 18. My mother is a dialysis patient and because of other medical issues, uses a walker to get around. I am her primary caregiver and source of transportation. Having reliable transportation is vital.
Our current transportation is basically falling apart around us. We have an older wheelchair accessible van that no longer works the way it is suppose to. The ramp no longer works, the windows don't work and the locks don't work. The back side doors no longer automatically open and close. They must be opened and closed by another person, from the outside of the van. This means my mom and I cannot go out anywhere by ourselves. The van does not have a front passenger seat, so my mother is not able to ride in the front and must struggle to get to the back seat. It is hard for me to safely secure my wheelchair to the floor, as a result my chair often slides while we are traveling. There are also exposed wires inside the van, along with a number of other issues. Basically we need another van. For us, what should be a simple trip (like to the doctor's office or to the store), becomes a hardship.
Between the two of us, my mom and I have our share of medical appointments, prescription costs and medical bills. Unfortunately, handicapped accessible vans are extremely expensive. Being able to afford one of these vans and have it equipped for me to drive, is a dream that is out of our reach, unless we have help. We are asking for your help to raise $65,000.00 to purchase a wheelchair accessible minivan and have the van fully equipped for me to drive (including all requirements and expenses for my specialized license).
This van would provide us with, much needed, reliable transportation to our medical appointments and able us to do normal everyday activities. The van will be equipped with an automatic ramp, automatic side doors, and hand controls. The hand controls will allow me to drive the van, giving me independence to drive us wherever we need to go. The van will also have electronic tie downs. These are devices placed in the floor, that will automatically lock my chair in place and keep it from sliding. Both of these devices must be purchased, added to the van and and set up specifically for me to use.
Purchasing a wheelchair accessible van and having everything set up for me to drive, would greatly improve our quality of life. My mother and I would greatly appreciate any donations to help us reach our goal of $65,000. We also ask that you please share our story with others.
