Hand-washing Station Project - DR

Donation protected
Hi!
As many of you know, I am in the Dominican Republic finishing my last semester as a Public Health Intern Student from UNC Wilmington. I have had quite the experience so far and have some exciting news to share!
Since being here, I have had the opportunity to teach a health education program that promotes basic hand-washing practices to students placed in low socioeconomic schools. Most of the students that I teach are sponsored kids whose parents cannot afford to send them to public school. Throughout the schools that I have taught, I have noticed a lack of hand-washing being encouraged to the students after use of the restroom, eating lunch and after playing outside. Most of the school's restroom (yes, only one in the entire school) does not contain a bar of soap. It did not take long for me to realize that simply teaching the kids about washing their hands with soap and water was not enough and that I needed to take further action if I wanted to see a change.
I am pleased to introduce to you all the 'Hand-washing Station Project' that I have designed to be placed in low socioeconomic school's here in the Dominican Republic. This Public Health infrastructure will provide access to a hygiene sanitation system to a school of nearly 100 students from ages 3-12. This station will be placed in the classrooms and will be designed to meet the needs of each age group and their class. The station will provide access to: buckets, clean water, anti-bacterial soap, and paper towels. My desire in this fundraising endeavor is to have sufficient supplies for one full calendar school year. To accomplish this, the estimate for one hand-washing station comes to USD1500.
This cost-effective intervention will be used as a pillar for the promotion of health and hygiene and the prevention of illness and disease among children here in the Dominican Republic. The hopes of this project will be to educate and encourage children about the importance of hygiene and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I pray you will partner with me in making this dream come true. A wise professor of mine once told me: "One thing all people of the world share is the desire for good health for themselves, their families, and their communities." Thank you and God Bless.
