<div>Just four months ago, Maui Now published an article titled “Nation’s First Communal Dialysis Home in Hāna Needs Repairs to Keep Operating.” The article highlighted the fragility of rural healthcare in our town and the repair needs at Hale Pōmaika‘i — the communal dialysis home that has allowed Hāna residents to receive life-sustaining treatment close to home since 2009.

<div>Without local dialysis access, patients must travel more than 100 miles round trip to Central Maui multiple times per week. For individuals with kidney failure, that commute is physically exhausting, financially burdensome, and medically risky.

<div>Now, just four months later, another major storm has swept across the islands, bringing flooding — and once again, the tarps at our thrift shop have blown off.
