Hamro Ekiden
12th August 2022

Hamro Run Club is a recreational run club and our goals are to build a Nepalese running community and promote health and fitness through running. The club was founded in 2020 we have managed to grow into a small community, and we are not stopping there. Our ambitions are to grow the community and make a difference whether small or big. Hamro Run Club members are taking on the Half Marathon Relay challenge to fundraise for the Children and Youth First organisation. The event is a Half Marathon Relay where each individual (or in pair) will complete 21km route before the next runner goes; this will be continuously done throughout the day and night.

Our main goal of the event is not only to raise awareness about our club but the charity Children and Youth First in Nepal and their mission to "create fair and just opportunities for disadvantaged kids and teens from Nepal's marginalised communities." We want to raise awareness of the cause and support the charity through our event and continue to do so as the run club grows. To hear the story about the children who were not welcomed to the other school was heart-breaking. No children should ever be rejected or discriminated against from any background. We as an adult have a natural role to take/look after the young ones as they are the future. Our fundraising goal for this event is £1000 (15% of the fundraise will go towards the non-profit organisation Folkestone Nepalese Community). Your donation will help the organisation to provide education and support for young children to young adults in higher education, it will provide basic necessities for daily lives, supports women at Haushala Creatives and more. With the help of our sponsors Folkestone Nepalese Community, Gurkha Hill and Himalayan Café, I believe the event “Hamro Ekiden” will be the first big step in establishing the club and at the same time we will raise the awareness of the Children and Youth First organisation and the mission.

The inspiration behind the challenge:
Hakone Ekiden is one of the biggest running events annually held in Japan where universities from across the country compete. The event is a relay half marathon where 10 runners from each team/universities compete to run a total distance of roughly 220km. Yes, you read that right. “Relay Half marathon”, is one of the most unique sporting events which involves combined efforts as a team from everyone. Running a half marathon together seemed too traditional. So, I have been inspired by the event for us to take it a step further by replicating something of our own. “Hamro Ekiden” - We will do our half marathon relay however this will not be in a competitive manner. It will be a charity fundraising event and a running challenge. This event will show our unity and commitment to running as well as making a difference in society with what we enjoy doing – running.
