Jaime Ham and Family-GBM Awareness

On April 4, 2011, I took my mom to the ER because she said a few things that didn't make sense. The next day she underwent brain surgery.  One week later she was diagnosed with grade 4 brain cancer called Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). GBM is the most aggressive brain tumor in humans, with a median survival time of 12-14 months.

We got Mom into a medical study at Duke, so she moved there to live with my sister for the summer and I traveled back and forth.   Mom moved home in August and continued treatment in Mobile. She was here for the birth of my son, the birth of my sister's son, she watched my brother play college football, and watched my younger sister get 3/4 of her way through architecture school. But eventually her cancer progressed and she passed away on September 3, 2012, 17 months after her diagnosis.

Those 17 months were a roller coaster of emotions with many hurdles, but many blessings as well. God always took care of us all, and Mom always trusted in His plan. My mom was the most loving person, who was truly a servant. She was always kind to others. Every day there were new struggles- physically, emotionally, and financially.   The love and support we received during those 17 months were overwhelming, and truly helped ease the pain of our ongoing tragedy.

This brings me to the point of sharing this with you. I have a friend who is dealing with this very same trial. Her name is Jaime Ham, and she recently got a call that her mom was going to undergo brain surgery. Her Mom lives in Texas so Jaime got in the car, left her two young children at home and went to be with her mom, who was later diagnosed with the same grade 4 brain cancer my mom had. I know exactly what she is going through and exactly what she faces. I can't think of any better way to honor my mom than to help someone and support them the same way we were supported. I'm hoping to raise money for Jaime for travel back and forth to Texas and for whatever she needs it for!
