Please help my sister and her family save their home and farm. She and her husband are dairy farmers along with their 5 children ages 9 to 18. They are hard working and have always dreamed of owning their own farm after years of farming for other families. That dream finally came true 2 years ago when Jim lost his job in the spring of 2011 and they decided to look for a farm of their own. They found a beautiful place in upstate New York that was being sold with owner financing as an option for a couple of years. They closed on the loan making a 20% down payment. They have poured their time & money into making the farm a successful business. They built a new milk house (the old one had been removed), rebuilt the tie stalls in the barn (also removed) & partially remodeled the upstairs of the house to make it livable for their children. They did all of this work themselves and finally started milking cows in March 2012. They have had a successful first year and have so many plans for the future. However, becuase of reasons beyond their control, they have been unable to refinance. Unknown to them at the time they closed on the original mortgage, because farming is considered the riskiest of businesses, you must have 3 years of records before refinancing. Please help save this thriving and successful dairy farm. Small family owned farms are going out of business all the time because of difficult economic times and having to deal with financial obstacles just like this.
