What is Haluan?
Haluan Hip-Hop Dance Troupe is the hip-hop dance team based under the Filipino Student Association at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Haluan performs at many on-campus events, such as MCF, Kresge Pride, MESA Day, VSA Banquet, as well as many off-campus events/competitions. On top of that, we also host sessions and workshops open to the general community to give people outside of Haluan a chance to learn and grow in dance. Being the only competitive hip-hop dance team based in Santa Cruz, Haluan has been a staple of the dance community within our university as well as the rest of Santa Cruz for over 22 years.
Why are we doing this crowdfund?
Since the hip-hop dance community is relatively small in Santa Cruz, Haluan is the main outlet for hip-hop dancers in Santa Cruz to have a safe space to do what they love. Recently our organization has been gaining recognition within the bigger hip-hop dance community outside of Santa Cruz, and we now wish to give something back to our friends and family in Santa Cruz. This upcoming May 2015, Haluan is planning to host a dance showcase at Cabrillo College's Crocker Theater, where we plan to bring in many teams from around California to showcase their talent to the Santa Cruz community. Of course, hosting a showcase takes a lot of planning and funding, especially on top of all the costs we already have each year, but we are confident that we can do it with your help!
What will my donations help pay for?
While we don't expect this crowdfund to pay for all our expenses, any help we can get is already a huge help! All donations will go straight to one or more of the following:
1. En Route: Urban Dance Showcase (May 23 , 2015)
This showcase is something we wanted to do for quite a while. It is our way of giving back to our friends, family, and alumni that have supported us all this time. We wanted to bring the hip-hop dance community to Santa Cruz to share what it is we all love doing, dance! But hosting a showcase has a lot of costs as well, including but not limited to:
- Venue costs
- Staffing costs
- Shirts
- Decorations
- Posters/Flyers
- Event Programs
2. Open Sessions and Workshops
Haluan hosts open sessions and workshops to allow others in the Santa Cruz community to have the opportunity to learn and grow through dance as well. Donations will also help us pay for the expenses of hosting these sessions/workshops, such as:
-Reserving studio space
-Paying for guest choreographers
3. Team Costs
Haluan has been gaining a lot of recognition in the hip-hop dance community, and we have been given a lot of opportunities to perform at shows and competitions in and outside of Santa Cruz. The remainder of the donations will go towards the costs for the team, such as:
-Competition fees
-Costumes for performances
-Props for performances
-Transportation costs
-Reserving studio space for practices
