The multi-million dollar produced reality TV show, "The Masked Singer Australia", stole the musical composition/arrangement of our licensed cover of "Bad Guy".
We are attempting to raise money to afford international legal representation to tackle this head on.
Our musical recording was published 22 weeks before their episode, and we have solid-indisputable evidence to prove it.
Halocene, has been on YouTube since 2008. We've produced hundreds of music videos and songs. We pay licensing fees and royalties to the artists we cover. In fact, we even lose money on many covers after production costs are considered. But we do it, because we have a passion for it. We love our community, fans, and YouTube/Twitch. More than anything, it has been fun and rewarding experience to share with the world.
Having said that... we have simply worked too hard, and too long, to sit by the way side and let a TV show make millions off a show featuring an arrangement we made.
It's a long shot, we know, but if for some odd reason this gains traction, it'd mean everything to us to be able to have an actual chance at standing up for ourselves. We feel it is our duty to make not just our voice heard, but hopefully inspire others to stand up and defend their hard work after so many years.
As a small band, we've never been able to afford management, an agent, booking agent, label, or attorney. This would be our first time bringing in an outside source to really help us out. We've done everything ourselves.
In the extremely unlikely scenario we hit our goal, pay for our legal fees, and don't end up using all of the capital for this specific case (for whatever reason), we will use the resources for accounting, potential legal matters, or to help secure our band's business side of things in general. We'd like to be able to afford all the help we can get, and not worry about the finances for future legal matters this might bring as well.
Full disclosure, we have quotes from law-firms already, and they're quoting us between $3,000 -$5000 just for getting started. That's not including continued hourly fees (which can be around $300 an hour). So imagine every 10 hours of work in this case costing an additional $3,000+. So as you can see, $15k for international legal representation, taking on a full network TV studio, is probably overly conservative.
If for some reason you may know someone in international law, or Australia entertainment/music law, please let us know. I'd be amazing if we could find someone who believed in our cause enough to even take a percentage on the back-end/victory, instead of upfront fees. But of course, that may be wishful thinking.
