Bring Halima to Scattergood

Halima Behroz wants to attend Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, IA. Our goal is to raise $14,027 by March 1, 2018. Halima is a peace activist, artist, student leader, and mountain climber. The best thing Americans can do to support the future of Afghanistan is to invest in young people like Halima!

Susan and Peter Matos, whose son also attends Scattergood, are raising funds to make this possible. Susan and Peter have hosted Latif during school breaks and are excited to support him and help his sister receive the same amazing education at Scattergood.
Halima is the president of the Fanus “Lantern” Charity and Cultural Group. In this role, she and Latif started the Kindness Wall project that was recognized by the New York Times. Ultimately, she wants to pursue a degree in Political Science and become a member of Afghanistan’s parliament.
She is not afraid of defying cultural norms and pushing for progress. Halima's poem “Don’t Call Me Names” was published for the Afghan Women Writing Project. In the future, she says, “I would like to write about the brave women in Afghanistan and fight for their rights.” As a member of the Afghan National Institute of Music, she has performed at the Afghan Presidential Palace, the U.S. Embassy, Canadian Embassy, and the Dutch Embassy. Her brother said, “Watching her on TV sometimes makes my parents proud but surely make the extremists unhappy and angry, which is one of the reasons there is no name of any of the girls mentioned in videos. ” She is also one of the first women to reach Afghanistan's second-highest mountain peak and looks forward to participating freely in Scattergood's famous service and adventure trips.
Scattergood makes a college-preparatory education uniquely affordable to students. Halima needs a minimum of $20,277 to qualify for an F-1 visa, to prove that she can afford to come to Scattergood. This includes tuition, room and board, health insurance, a nominal monthly allowance during the school year, and for individuals to host Halima when school is not in session. We have received large checks from annonymous donors, so we have lowered the goal on this GoFundMe page to reflect how much we still need. The money is being kept in a savings account that Susan and Peter monitor, and the money will be transferred to Scattergood when Halima's visa is approved to book her flight, pay initial tuition, etc.
The Admissions Committee has reviewed Halima’s application and qualifications and wholeheartedly recommends Halima to be admitted to Scattergood. Scattergood's accreditation and memberships: Independent School Association of Central States (ISACS), The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Friends Council on Education (FCE)
