Steve is a 55 year-old father of two fine young men. He is a musician, songwriter, and restaurant manager. He is now the same age his mother and father both were when they died. Steve does not wish to carry on that particular family tradition.
Over the course of the past five months, he has endured a major lumpectomy surgery to his neck and throat to remove a tumor slightly smaller than a golf ball. He lost a tonsil, a lymph node, and 20% of the base of his tongue. It was impossible to cut out 100% of the carcinoma (tumor) in Steve's throat because it was attached to his jugular vein. So then, after a few weeks of healing from the surgery, he began six weeks of chemotherapy, and seven weeks of radiation therapy to his head and neck area.
Due of the nature and location of these procedures, eating is very difficult and painful for him, and his appetite is all but non-existent. He has lost nearly 50 pounds and right now is convalescing at home, trying to put a few pounds back on and work up strength to return to work as soon as he possibly can. It will be possibly be another eight to ten weeks (or longer) before he can return to work full time and then two more weeks before he has money coming in. Possibly even longer and into the spring. If doctors find any abnormality in the pet scan scheduled for early February, he may have to go through the chemotherapy and radiation treatments AGAIN.
Impending living expenses (rent, unpaid medical expenses not covered by insurance, car expenses, utilities, etc.) are looming, bill collectors are already starting to call, and he needs a little cushion to stay current and not spiral into bankruptcy.
Steve feels very lucky and fortunate about the location of his tumor because it was easily detectable and he received the necessary medical attention in a timely fashion. Many tumors are much less obvious and often times go undetected until it is too late. He realizes there are many, many, people worse off than him and he is extremely grateful for any amount of assistance, no matter what amount. <3 , and sharing this post in your own newsfeed will be very helpful as well :)
