Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere, was hit by hurricane Matthew on October 4th.
The hurricane classified measuring Cat 4 in strength
made landfall near Les Anglais. The Southern part of the country is worst hit. The only bridge connecting the South with the rest of the country has been washed away and there is widespread structural devastation.
As of October 7th the death toll has passed 800 with many people still unaccounted for.
In excess of 1855 houses have been flooded, 14,530 people have been evacuated to shelters and 350,000 people are in urgent need of assistance.
Communications in the affected areas are a huge challenge and reports are only coming though sporadically. Medical teams are travelling to the affected areas but are having trouble establishing contact. Requests for aid are taking too long to get through.
Disaster Tech Lab was founded in response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010. We have years of experience working in the country and have a very well established network of contacts.
We have already shipped urgently needed communications equipment to partner organisations on the ground and are getting a team ready to deploy to Haiti in the coming days.
The team will assess the damage to the communications infrastructure and the need for our assistance. They will carry sufficient equipment to deal with the most urgent requirements.
However we require your assistance in enabling us to carry out this work. There are certain costs to be covered (accommodation, travel, security etc.) when on the ground in Haiti.
