This past May, Astral headed back to his hometown of Gonaives, Haiti for a family member’s funeral. It was the first time he’d been back in about 12 years. Though the reason he went wasn’t for a happy occasion, it was amazing that he was able to reconnect with family he hadn’t seen since he was a teenager. With poverty being a very real issue in Gonaives, Astral sought to help his siblings with their businesses; a little bit of help on our end makes a huge difference in their daily lives. But the story doesn’t stop with his siblings.
Astral met his niece, Rose Carline "RC", and fell in love. He saw the impoverished situation that she had been in since birth and his heart was broken for her. He called me while he was still in Haiti and said, “I want her to come live with us”. There was no doubt in my mind that this was what we needed to do. The thought of us being able to help her brought incredible joy to my heart.
After meeting with a lawyer, we determined that bringing RC here on an education visa would be the quickest route, potentially taking a few months, rather than a couple years. But to come to the US on an education visa, she is requried to have a school sponsor. We found one school in Hampton Roads area (either public or private) that accepts and welcomes international students of all ages who don’t speak English: Virginia Beach Friends School. It’s a private school that has a very hands-on approach to learning and a strong English Second Language program. How perfect for RC!
She was accepted into VBFS and the staff has been so helpful during this whole process.
Astral and I went to Haiti for her visa interview this past July. We are so excited to say that her visa was approved and she came to America on August 6!
We are SO glad she is here! But we could really use your help! Total tuition for the 2017-2018 school year is $18,600, due August 30, 2017. With us only being aware of RC's situation since this past May, we have had little time to financially prepare. We are working multiple jobs and have done fundraisers through friends' businesses, but any type of donation would be so greatly appreciated. We have about $7,500 left to pay for tuition.
