Hairdressers volunteer in the south of Puerto Rico

I'm Mercedes, I own a salon in DC, my family and my heart are in Puerto Rico, and they need our help. 

We're raising money to help cover costs for hairdressers from all over the continental U.S going to Puerto Rico for a 1 or 2 day event volunteering their haircutting skills in the earthquake-affected region. Money will be used for a small amount of supplies, to either hire a professional coach to drive us from our lodging to the areas where affected people are now living, or for a van rental, meals for the stylists at local restaurants to bring revenue to the earthquake stricken area, and possibly a portion of our lodging depending on how much we raise. We are in communication with a small hotel in the town of Guanica that will be reopening soon about booking our group to stay.

In the southwestern town of Guanica alone, 52% of homes will likely need to be demolished due to the level of damage suffered by the series of earthquakes over the last many weeks, and throughout the southern region there could be as nearly a thousand homes that have been severely damaged, leaving thousands of residents homeless and sleeping in tents. Electricity and potable water aren't guaranteed where we'll be going. 


Five months after the hurricanes in 2017 I went with a fellow hairdresser to volunteer our skills in a hard hit area of Mayaguez.  After realizing the impact of our work, I returned 6 months later with 7 other hairdressers to an underprivileged area of San Juan where residents were still feeling the effects of the devastation.

We're hoping to have an even larger impact with this upcoming trip with an even bigger response than I’ve received in the past. . 

Any unused funds will be donated to World Central Kitchen, who continue to work hard to feed and uplift the people of Puerto Rico.
