Fundraising Campaign – Collecte de Fonds – حملة جمع التبرعات
During the night of Wednesday, May 13th, a fire destroyed the oldest part of the Hafsia fripe market – often called "souk al-qdim" by the traders – in the historic heart of Tunis. The blaze spread rapidly across an area of 1000 m2, ravaging inflammable wooden market stalls and bales of second-hand clothes, shoes and leather wares. Within a few hours, the fire had turned to ashes livelihoods that had already been thrown into disarray by the COVID-19 lockdown, which had forced traders to keep their stalls closed for almost two months and therefore left them without an income.
The traders returned to work with a sigh of relief on Monday, May 11th, hoping the good business in the weeks before Aid Al-Fitr- the end of Ramadan - would help them to make up for their losses. Now, they are confronted with the razing of their merchandise and vending stalls, but also, as they put it "blasetna", Tunisian for “our place” in the city. This is because many of the traders in this oldest part of the Hafsia fripe market came to Tunis as rural migrants, often with nothing more than the clothes they wore. They built up their market incrementally on the demolition site of the Hara-Hafsia, part of the historic Jewish ghetto of Tunis, from the 1960s onwards. The Hafsia market became the first permanent used clothing market of central Tunis and endured despite renewal operations and major transformations in the neighbourhood.
Every single market stall that has gone up in flames is thus intertwined with trajectories of traders who worked hard to carve out 'their place' in Tunis, a city that often considered “nuzuh” (lit. displaced) – a term used for rural migrants – as undesirables. While the losses of every individual affected are incommensurable, it is also a part of the history of Tunis that has been lost with the fripe market.

The goal of this fundraising initiative* - organised in partnership between Collectif Créatif and the Journal de la Médina - is to financially support the traders of the Hafsia fripe market who have lost their stalls and merchandise in the March 13th 2020 fire and now need to completely rebuild their market.
The collected funds in € will be transferred to the Tunisian association Collectif Créatif, based in the medina of Tunis, which will ensure an equitable distribution to the group of fripe traders affected.
The team of the Journal de la Medina will meanwhile follow up the process of market reconstruction closely with the traders and will provide updates, photos and stories to all those who generously decide to participate in this fundraising effort.
All those who make a contribution of more than 30€ will receive a copy of the limited, hand-printed edition of the latest Journal de la Médina on "urban politics" (04/2020) via mail !!! To get your copy posted, send an email with your donation confirmation and postal address to [email redacted]
