Half Marathon for BEACON Hosting

I am running the Hackney Half Marathon on 30th April and I am aiming to raise £500 for the BEACON Hosting Project' s vital work with destitute asylum seekers.
This offers temporary accommodation for destitute asylum seekers in volunteer households in Bradford. We offer some of the most vulnerable people in our society the opportunity for respite and support. These are people who have neither the right to earn a living, nor any entitlement to welfare benefits or even to a roof over their heads. They have left their own countries, having experienced severe persecution as a result of their political opinions or faith, suffered further trauma and financial abuse on the hazardous journey that brought them to Britain. Many fall through gaping holes in a legal process that fosters a culture of disbelief.
BEACON’s Hosting Project has been running since 2008. It supports volunteer hosts to provide a home to destitute refused asylum seekers. Hosting provides guests with a secure, supportive environment in which they have the opportunity to research and gather the fresh evidence they need in order to submit a fresh asylum claim. At least a third of the 63 people hosted since October 2008 had been granted leave to remain. Others have submitted fresh asylum claims and are waiting for decisions. These are people who fled extreme trauma in their homelands but who, without a safe place to stay whilst they gathered fresh evidence to resubmit their asylum claims, may well have been forced to return to the very situations they fled.
Our Hosting Project currently only costs around £4, 000 a year to run. We are in the process of approving new hosts and our capacity will expand so we need your support more than ever! Please share this widely with friends & family.
I have worked at BEACON for almost 3 years and have seen the incredible impact of what our hosts do for the guests. The project is run by our two coordinators who do so in a voluntary capacity. However we are always in need of funds to offer the support that do. We give our guests ‘allowances’ to restore dignity and independence and need to cover other vital expenses such as travel costs and expenses for our volunteer hosts.

Any contribution, however small will make a big difference to our work:
£2 will help towards vital running costs of the project
£4.5 will cover the bus fare for a guest to travel to an appointment (eg their solicitor or GP)
£15 will provide a guest’s allowance for a week – their only source of income towards food and clothing
£20 covers a host’s expenses for a week to cover food and to contribute to bills
As many of you will know I spent most of my school PE lessons learning how to stand as far away from any ball that might be thrown and minimising any possible exertion. So running 13.1 miles through my home borough of Hackney is a big deal for me!
